James Frey: What was the idea behind the Biennale project? Why break away from painting and make films?
Richard Phillips: Well, I was in the process of organising a photo shoot with Lindsay Lohan when [curator] Neville Wakefield asked me to contribute to his Commercial Break film project for the Venice Biennale—essentially a grouping of artists screening commercial-length films in the non-commercial zone that is Venice.
And why Sasha Grey?
I likewise was in conversation with her about staging a photo shoot to make a series of paintings for my 2012 show at Gagosian Gallery in New York.
Who is hotter—Lindsay or Sasha?
Ha... well, they’re both very, very hot... but in different ways.
