Seberang Perai, Penang, November 10, 2011– The Green School Awards 2011 for all schools in Seberang Perai ended last week with the final presentation from selected schools that have made it into the finals. The prize presentation ceremony was held at the MPSP auditorium on 8 November 2011. Six schools were awarded with the Gold Awards and twelve others were given the Silver Awards. The Gold Award winners received a cash prize of RM1000 each, while the Silver Award winners received RM600 each that is sponsored by Continental Automotive Components Malaysia Sdn Bhd. The six that were awarded with the Gold Awards gave an interesting presentation to the panel of judges to compete for the overall championship.

Both, Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan (C) True Light, Kampung Juru, and Sekolah Menengah Dato’ Onn, Butterworth, again emerged as the overall champion for the second consecutive year in the primary and secondary school category respectively. Both champions received another RM1000 each (in total RM2000 each).

More schools have taken part this year and have shown tremendous interest and efforts through the program, many are now more conscious about keeping the environment clean and more ideas and methods have been practiced, reaching closer to the goals towards green and healthy living lifestyle. The Green School program also helps cultivate a responsible future generation.

There were a few activities that stood out this year, where some schools have reached out to the public sharing their best practices. SJKC True Light who has been sharing their activities via the popular media FACEBOOK; as well as donating the plants from their herbal garden to cancer patients and encouraging the reduction of CO2 via their “Turn off your vehicle’s engine while waiting program” and, SM Dato’ Onn who has been sharing their activities with other schools locally and also via international exchange programs. We hope more schools will follow.

Some other schools displayed their innovative ideas. For example, using the bat waste as compost or having butterfly conservatory in the school. The interest of the students and teachers and the results from the activities to save energy, reduce waste, creative handicrafts using recycled materials and many more, are examples of the success of our Green School program.
