THE ALL-NEW VOLVO V60 - blend of great looks and performance and world leading safety

Kuala Lumpur, January 11, 2012: Cruising into town with a coupe-like design, dynamic performance, advanced driving ability and world leading safety features, the ALL-NEW VOLVO V60 is set to become Volvo’s latest winner among Malaysian car buyers looking for THAT special car.

With its added versatility and practicality combined with its eye-catching design, powerful engines, sporty handling and chock-full of amazing safety features, this svelte Sportswagon is a clear front-runner for the title of "The Most Dynamic Volvo Model Ever".

“Together with the XC60 and the S60, the ALL-NEW V60 is firmly cementing the Volvo brand as a manufacturer of dynamic cars,” said Mr. Peter Johnson, Volvo Car’s Vice President of Sales & Marketing for Asia Region.

"Many customers who have had a preview look at the ALL-NEW V60 during the development process feel that this Sportswagon is breaking the mould to become Volvo’s sportiest car ever."

“With such amazing qualities but with the added versatility and extra space over its S60 sedan sibling, the ALL-NEW V60 just about takes the title of ‘The Most Dynamic Volvo Model Ever’,” he added.

The typical V60 customer is an S60 buyer who would like some extra space and flexibility, but without the slightest compromise on great looks and exciting driving properties, he said.

Johnson added: “We have further boosted the interior's sense of exclusive quality and packed the car with safety and comfort-related technical innovations. Plus the fact that Volvo is the only brand offering models in this segment in Malaysia, the result is that the ALL-NEW V60 is a truly unique Sportswagon, in total harmony with its sporty, yet practical attitude."

Coupe rather than estate

The pronounced wedge shape and the slim coupe-like roof line of the ALL-NEW V60 are accompanied by the shoulder profile along the car's sides, creating a gentle yet powerful double wave from the headlamps at the front to the tail lamps at the rear. This dip in the middle of the double wave visually pushes the car down, enhancing the stance and makes the car look sleeker and lower. The sculpted bonnet and the short overhangs front and rear also emphasize the sports car feel.

"From the design viewpoint the focus was on making the car as close to a coupe as possible, while retaining that handy extra space at the rear. Our Sportswagon does not aim to compete with the traditional estate car. For the customer who wants a lot of load space, there is always our XC60 or XC90," said Johnson.

Uncompromising sportiness with racing inspiration

Even for the interior, Volvo's designers obtained their inspiration from the racing track in their quest for uncompromising sportiness.

"This is a Volvo with a totally different dynamic presence than previous models. The racing track's dramatic yet harmoniously flowing lines can be traced in almost every interior detail. It's an interior for all your senses," said Johnson.

"Every detail looks like it's in motion. All these lines ‘embrace' the driver's cockpit. The instruments and centre stack are angled towards the driver to enhance the sensation of focus and control. The new dynamic three-spoke steering wheel and the new sports seats with extra side supports are standard. There isn't a single weak point or compromise anywhere in the dynamic approach we adopted from the very beginning."

Uncompromising chassis approach

Volvo Cars' chassis experts have chiseled out the driving experience in the ALL-NEW V60 with the same passion and uncompromising approach that characterized the development of the S60 sedan.

The result is an authentic sportswagon with driving properties that do the sporty lines full justice.

"We've pushed the envelope to limits we've never previously approached. You simply have to drive this car to appreciate how we've driven chassis development to its pinnacle. Take the car out on a narrow, winding country road where every bend brings a new challenge and the ALL-NEW V60 will demonstrate its agility with sparkling enthusiasm," Johnson said.

The most high-tech Volvo ever

The sporty interior of the new V60 is also the most advanced high-tech environment ever available to a Volvo driver. Groundbreaking and world leading technology such as the Pedestrian Detection with full auto brake takes Volvo's safety dedication yet another step towards the vision of building cars that do not get involved in accidents.

In the field of comfort, there are features such as the optional Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), which automatically maintains a set gap to the vehicle in front. What is new is that the Adaptive Cruise Control operates at speeds below 30 km/h, all the way down to standstill.

Exciting colours

The ALL-NEW V60 is being launched with a range of exterior colours selected with immense care to emphasize the model's inspiring lines. Among the 5 colours available are the Electric Silver, Ember Black, Ice White, Seashell and Flamenco Red.

"These colours have an impactful presence in both the fashion and sports industries, as well as in interior design and architecture. Our ambition is to give customers a flair of sportiness and exclusivity in a new, exciting way,” said Johnson.

A delight for car enthusiasts

In simple terms, car buyers can be divided into two main categories: enthusiasts and pragmatists. For the enthusiast, the car is a high-priority conversation topic that can never be exhausted, while the pragmatist only shows interest in the car market when it is time to replace the current vehicle with a new one every three or four years or so.

In an historical perspective, Volvo's brand has attracted more pragmatists than enthusiasts. However, with each successive generation of Volvo models offering increasingly emotive appeal, that picture has changed - and the new V60 is packed with all the ingredients from the enthusiast's favourite menu.

"The figure ‘60' in our model range nowadays indicates our sportiest models. The XC60 was the first step. The next was with the all-new S60 sedan - and now we're launching the ALL-NEW V60 Sportswagon," said Johnson.

Turbocharged Engines & Selling Price

Today’s launch introduces the ALL-NEW V60 in 2 locally assembled variants, namely the T4 and the T5, which are priced at RM230,000 (T4) and RM269,000 (T5), both prices on-the-road, without insurance.

Both the T4 and T5 features a Gasoline Turbocharged Direct Injection (GTDi) engine which represents Volvo’s very latest direct injection technology. The GTDi was developed to offer really low fuel consumption without compromising on performance or driving pleasure.

The T5 is a 2.0-litre petrol engine which pumps out a blistering 240 hp and 320 Nm of torque, available from 1800 to 5000 revs a minute, taking you from 0-100 km/h in 7.7 seconds flat, and pushes you to a top speed of 230km/h.

The new T4 is a 1.6-litre, 180 hp petrol engine, delivering a massive torque of 240 Nm from just 1600 and all the way up to 5000 revs a minute. An on-demand overboost function further increases torque to a massive 270 Newton metres. And with its fuel efficient dual-clutch Powershift transmission, the result is excellent pulling power across the entire speed range, providing a particularly comfortable driving experience yet consuming only 7.5 litres per 100km for a combined driving cycle in cities and highways.

“This puts the T4 among the most powerful 1.6-litre engines in Malaysia currently,” said Johnson, adding that "small, high-performance GTDi engines combined with our fuel efficient dual-clutch Powershift transmission are our bid to get more energy and efficiency out of smaller engines."
