Size does matter, the Hyundai Grand Starex Royale

The name says it all, I reckon when Hyundai wanted to made an impression into building people carrier MPVs they decided to go big. The Grand Starex Royale, standing at 6.5’feet tall and 17’feet in length is not what you may call your average sized MPV. A mini bus would not be an appropriate name but it definitely bestows the description of BIG!

The Hyundai Starex is a large comfortable 11-seater MPV. Available in 2 variants; Grand Starex Royale & Grand Starex, they both share the same 2.5litre CRDi VGT engine. The engine is highly efficient considering the sheer size of moving this large cabin. A forced air induction unit is mounted onto this powertrain and a VGT or Variable Geometry Turbo technology, electronically controls the angles of the vanes to ensure instant engine response especially at low speeds. An intercooler is installed to cool down the air and making it more efficient as it churns out 125kW at 3,800rpm. Maximum torque of this engine is 392Nm at 2,000-2,500rpm and it meets Euro III emission standards.

The Starex, is a fun vehicle to drive if you wish to put the power down to overtake anyone. Taking its size into consideration, this van would dwarf any vehicle from behind or from the side. This car has a more car like feel than your regular MPV. Overall NVH and ride quality is great, with the exception of course that one does not drive it around like a race car! We managed to hit really fast speeds in this Giant MPV, and weaving thru traffic (though not recommended) it was amazingly agile! This car turns in really quickly and very precise in its footing. One would know exactly where each tire was in relation to the apex or cornering lines. This MPV turns fully with only a mere 5.6m turning radius. That will give it the ability to maneuver around tight areas anytime. MacPherson struts at the front end of the suspension helps its agility with a live axle at the rear coupled with multi-link and coil springs help for a better ride at the rear.

In terms of making this MPV a safer bet, it has both active and passive safety features. Reverse cameras are placed as standard packages with audio sensors for double precautions. Equipped with side protection bars, and dual air bags in the front, this MPV also has the ability to have a frontal impact of 4km/h that will get away unscathed. Front visibility is enhanced by a large front windscreen that minimizes all blind spots, plus with a driver’s seating position emulating a passenger car, this MPV will astound you with its sheer ease of drivability. ABS is standard with an Electronic Brake Force Distribution to ensure a safe stop. Running with a 4 channel system for the ABS, there is also a low brake pad warning sensor equipped.

The Hyundai Starex 2.5 CRDi has 2 main variants, which is the Grand Starex and the Grand Starex Royale. The Royale is equipped with a trendy body kit, larger wheels, and leather interior. Priced at under RM150,000.00 for the Grand Starex Royale, this giant MPV also comes with a very attractive warranty package of 5 years or 300,000km whichever comes first. Of course, LCD TV, and cup holders are fitted as standard, not forgetting the flat floored cabin area to ease walkabouts. I guess this is one giant MPV that will leave a big impression on the term of good value for money!
